Surface Labs
A downloadable tool for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android
About the Project
Surface Labs is a procedural texturing application similar to Substance Designer with some different features under the hood. It's built for indie devs, 3D artists, and hobbyists who would prefer to own their toolkit rather than rent it. The app contains most of what you'd expect - generators, filters, blends, math, etc. Plus some new things you probably won't find much elsewhere:
- preview PBR output as the canvas background
- raw GLSL shader node
- draw node for authoring custom masks, sculpting details, etc.
There are no accounts, no subscriptions, and no telemetry. It runs fully offline and work never leaves your machine(s) unless you explicitly export a project yourself. I guess technically then it'd be leaving... My goal is to make it pay once and you own it, that's that.
What's Inside
- Node Graph Editor with 30+ nodes
- Live GPU evaluation for thumbnails and PBR preview
- Reusable subgraphs and shareable .surfacenode packages
- 2D/3D preview
- "Shelf" system to organize materials and graphs in the app
Cross Platform
Surface Labs is also available on iPadOS via Testflight, with plans to expand onto Android, Linux, and Mac. The only hold up is hardware for testing, I don't own a Mac so that's really my biggest hiccup.
What to Expect
This is early access built by a solo dev. The core works well enough, but there may be rough edges and missing polish in some places. Early testing and feedback helps improve the app and its future into full public release. My goals moving forward are as follows:
- Obtain a used mac mini to test on MacOS.
- Release on Steam for easier app distribution and community visibility
- Deeper subgraph editing and more nodes/transformers
- Open to suggestions! Early feedback helps steer the course
Supporting Development
This early access is being given free of charge! This is for early feedback and bug tests - as well as a check for how well received the application is. Paying $5+ will receive the following benefits:
- Early Supporter role in the Surface Labs Discord
- Access to the iPadOS Testflight, already at feature parity with desktop
